Jyväskylä, city of international events
Jyväskylä is experienced in arranging large-scale international events. Jyväskylä is the second most popular city for fairs in Finland and also an important congress venue.
The Martti Ahtisaari lecture is arranged annually in Jyväskylä. Martti Ahtisaari, tenth President of the Republic of Finland is the most international of Finland’s heads of state from a career perspective. President Martti Ahtisaari was awarded both the Nobel and UNESCO peace prizes in 2008. The lecture series that bears President Martti Ahtisaari’s name began in 1999, when the presidents of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Finland gathered in Jyväskylä on March 8th 1999 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the end of the Cold War. The lecture has been given by government leaders from Finland and other countries, most recently by President of Turkey Abdullah Gül in 2008.
For more than fifty years now Jyväskylä has been the venue for the Finnish round of the World Rally Championship, currently known as Neste Oil Rally Finland, which has been voted the best rally in the world on several occasions. Last year the rally attracted 300 000 spectators.
Both the University of Jyväskylä and the city’s business life bring high-profile global conferences and events to Jyväskylä each year.
