Citizens take people pride in their own symphony orchestra, Jyväskylä Sinfonia, which comprises professional musicians from a number of different countries. The city also boasts numerous choirs and theatre companies, of which many have tasted international success. Concerts in Jyväskylä are arranged both indoors and outdoors and different theatres, for instance Jyväskylä City Theatre, stage productions of a high standard.
Finland’s oldest urban festival, Jyväskylä Festival, is arranged each year in July, filling the centre of the city with its boisterous, happy atmosphere. The city centre pedestrian precinct, festival marquee, churches and other venues are suddenly awash with performances, club evenings, theatre, music and special courses. Each year the festival brings together on stage both top Finnish artists and world stars; in addition to paying events there are also numerous happenings where admission is free.
