About the city

With nearly 140,000 inhabitants, Jyväskylä is the seventh largest city in Finland. It is famous for its achievements in science, education and technology, its versatile, youthfully unpolished cultural activities and its beautiful and varied nature at the heart of the city. The ambition of Jyväskylä is to become a resource-smart city in all its operations. The Jyväskylä urban region has been chosen as the national coordinator in the development of cyber security.
Jyväskylä was founded in 1837. Renowned as a university city, Jyväskylä has been closely associated with education from the very beginning. Teacher training in particular has long traditions in Jyväskylä. Nowadays Jyväskylä is home to students in many different fields. Around 45,000 people – every fourth inhabitant – living in Jyväskylä are school-goers or students.

The University of Jyväskylä is a highly esteemed multidisciplinary university with seven faculties. It is recognised in Finland as a leading teacher training and adult education institution, as well as being an education importer. The Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences is the only university-level educational institute of its kind in Finland. In the university image survey conducted by Finnish market research company Taloustutkimus Oy in 2015, the University of Jyväskylä was rated Finland’s third best-known university.

JAMK University of Applied Sciences has four units, of which the Teacher Education College has already been the most popular in Finland for several years. JAMK trains specialists in technology, business, health and welfare. In the university image survey conducted by Taloustieto in 2015, JAMK also earned a good rating, reaching fourth place in the comparison between the overall ratings awarded to universities of applied sciences.

Jyväskylä is one of Finland’s fastest-growing business hubs. International high-growth enterprises, start-up companies and new innovation platforms such as Jyväskylän Kangas create a solid framework for growing business. Underlying its competence in digitalisation, cyber security and bioeconomy are broad-ranging and high-quality research and education activities. Major technology companies in Jyväskylä include: Valmet, Moventas, TeliaSonera, Tieto, Landis + Gyr, Airbus Defence and Space, and Protacon. Some 6,700 companies in total conduct business in Jyväskylä.

Jyväskylä is a multicultural, tolerant and international city with inhabitants representing as many as 122 different nationalities. The main services and attractions of this dynamic and compact city are located within walking distance of each other.
