Jyväskylä, city of sport
Sport is a visible part of the image of Jyväskylä since the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences - the only one of its kind in Finland - is located at the University of Jyväskylä. Research in sport and physical recreation is conducted by KIHU (Research Institute for Olympic Sports), LIKES (Foundation for Sport and Health Sciences) and the Sports Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. High-level competition sport is particularly well catered for in Jyväskylä.
Jyväskylä is also a paradise for lovers of physical exercise. There are altogether 242 facilities for sports on offer and they are in frequent use by the inhabitants of the city. The number of annual visits to these sports facilities exceeds two million. People in Jyväskylä take an active interest in over 70 different types of sports in more than a hundred sports clubs. The most famous mass event is the Finnish round of the world rally championship, Neste Oil Rally Finland, and the most popular spectator sport is ice hockey.
Jyväskylä is a dynamic city of sports and culture which is easy to reach by many different ways of transport, by train, and plane.
