City in the middle of nature

Jyväskylä is situated at the northern end of scenic Lake Päijänne, in the heart of the beautiful Finnish Lakeland. Lake Päijänne, the second largest lake in Finland, offers a wide range of recreational possibilities for inhabitants and tourists alike. One third of the lake is located within the area of the City of Jyväskylä.
Central Finland’s varied and unspoilt nature starts off right next to the city and attracts people with different interests all year round. The variety of activities during the summer include hiking, biking, boating and fishing. There are also several golf courses in the region. In winter, cross-country and downhill skiing are excellent ways of relaxing.

Located right in the city centre is the Lutakko harbour with cosy restaurant ships and inviting sauna-rafts. It is also conveniently located for taking a lake cruise or a hiking trip along the Rantaraitti route. This highly popular pedestrian and cycling route circling around Lake Jyväsjärvi attracts people from all walks of life with its magnificent view over the lake. The route also features interesting art experiences.

Finns have a passion for summer cottages in peaceful locations, usually on a lake shore, and these are also available for conferences and congress guests.

A Finnish speciality, the smoke sauna, is also worth experiencing. The world’s largest smoke sauna is located less than 30 minutes drive away in Tupaswilla. Numerous smaller saunas and smoke saunas can be found in the city and in its immediate vicinity.
