Cultural life in Jyväskylä is best described as highly diverse. The cultural offering extends from edgy happenings put on by students through to high culture. Citizens pride themselves in the symphony orchestra, Jyväskylä Sinfonia, which consists of professional musicians from a number of different countries. The city also boasts numerous choirs and theatre companies, of which many have tasted international success. Concerts in Jyväskylä are arranged both indoors and outdoors and different theatres, for instance Jyväskylä City Theatre, stage productions of a high standard.
The oldest urban festival in the Nordic countries, Jyväskylä Festival, is arranged each year in July, filling the centre of the city with its boisterous and happy atmosphere. The city centre pedestrian zone, festival marquee, churches and other venues are suddenly alive with performances, club evenings, theatre, music and special courses. Each year the festival brings together on stage both top Finnish artists and world stars. For about half of the events participation is free of charge. Further information can be found here.
